Document Summary

A primary package is the packaging material that comes in direct contact with the food product it is surrounding. For example, if you lift the unopened inner package of a cereal box out from the box, you see that you have two packages. The slightly opaque plastic package containing your cereal is the primary package, while the cardboard box with all of the brand graphics and nutrition information is the secondary package. A corrugated (folded panel) box, or shipping container, serves as the most common form of a tertiary package. The job for the tertiary container is to hold a group (perhaps a dozen) products together for ease in shipping from the manufacturing facility. Boxing is the last station of the production line, and boxed product is taken to the shipping and receiving area for distribution. However, boxes are not transported one at a time. Instead, they are compiled as a quaternary packaging.
