We were soldiers once and young is a book that tells the story of lt. Moore"s story is of savage devastation, taking place in the ia drang valley. Moore spent thirty-four days in vietnam in 1965. In contrast, a rumour of war tells the story of philip caputo and the rest of the 9th expeditionary brigade in da nang, vietnam. Vietnam was much longer than moore"s, with caputo being there for a total of a three-year enlistment. Both novels share many similarities as they both follow the stories of young soldiers in the heat of the vietnam war, yet the stories seem vastly different from one another. A rumour of war and we were soldiers once and young have very different starts to their story. After a rumour of war"s prologue the book starts with a hopeful caputo, untouched by war and oblivious to the horrors he was about to encounter.
