Due to these associations they were protected during the dark ages and thrived once the development of city states into the middle ages. Grapes grew well in warm sunny areas of southern europe, and became the centre of wine production. Travellers then began to sell wine to spain and portugal and the british. The british had naval power and allowed the exportation of wine and grapes to exist .
