Document Summary

Consequentialism: niccol machiavelli, the morality of an action can only be judged based on its consequences, every action has a consequence. Wednesday, october 21, 2015: people must fear the government, deception is needed when the ruler feels it should be. Machiavelli and hobbes, in their own ways, believe that fear in the people relates to effective political ruling. They both state that in order to maintain power and peace, they must be feared by all the people that they rule or else they will fall short on control. Both philosophers believe that because of the nature of human beings, that fear is the only way they can be disciplined into following the laws laid out. Machiavelli and hobbes view politics also shows how they believe all people have no morals and cannot be trusted so therefore, fear is the only way to go.
