Socrates starts by describing a just city; a city provides a larger context: book ll: the protection of the city is the task of guardians who by their nature are suited for this task (400-403) The guardians are trained from childhood in a multitude of sports to develop traits like courage, harmony, grace, bravery, etc. When it comes to their education, socrates is not comfortable with poets who enjoy a high status in ancient greek, and question whether they can be good teachers. Socrates believes poets are dangerous because they are liars and are not fit to be teachers for guardians. From childhood to 18, they must be trained in music and sports. From 18 to 20, they receive physical training and do military service. From 20 to 30, they learn mathematics including geometry, calculus, arithmetic. From 30-35, they must study dialectics or pure theory.
