He(cid:859)s trying to show that bodies exist, but what(cid:859)s key for our purposes is the distinction he(cid:859)s drawing here between the mind and body. *it thinks and it is united with the physical body. *mind and body work together in a unique way that nothing else does. *this is not something we can analyze any further it makes no sense to reason. *he sees the mind as the defining feature for the self. *the essential defining feature of mind is that it thinks. This is (cid:858)(cid:373)e(cid:859) (our essence)- no matter what state my body is in, this is the essence of my self. Intellectual- they reason and think, they do math and think about abstract concepts. The essential defining feature of bodies is extension. Non- rational- they do not reason or contemplate abstract concepts. Mortal- they produce feeling, emotion, pain, hunger or thirst. This seems to imply that my power of imagining depends on something other than myself(cid:863) (p. 28) descartes.
