logic. There are analytic and materialist parts of Indian
philosophy. Indian Philosophy has meditation that says it’s not
religions why? Because it’s individual instead of collective.
They don’t necessary need to believe in the reality the at they
take on faith. Religion you believe in faith. The most basic
meditation, you rely on techniques solely instead of faith.

Euripides: Bacchae (the cult of Dionysus) rationalistic. Rome
introduced universal law abiding, but on the other hand was law
breaking and passion seeking.
North America: sex, drugs and rock and roll but also purism.
India goes to more extremes then most. Children in India are
not allowed to go to temples because of graphic pornographic
statues and art.
Indian culture is very extreme about sex. The other side is
self-deprivation as a sacrifice to the gods. (ie. Women with
very very long hair, she can’t have a normal life if her hair is
6.2 M long! There is also fasting.
Nikes new campaign, believe in something even if it means
sacrificing everything.
Some have been torn between the two extremes, together are the
extremes. They are also advocates of moderation. Buddha= the
middle way between the extremes. No extreme will get you there,
so why is India so extreme? It is by its nature adventurous.
It is a combination of two very different cultures, all cultures
have mixed blood due to invasions. India has a Caste system,
which separates them. This prohibits intermarriage.
The original civilization=mohonjo Daro(part of Pakistan) not a
lot is known about the culture, but they made statues. (the
naked statue from their culture suggests they were sensualistic.
7 of the founding cultures of India was very central. No one
knows what they looked like, but they were nomadic & warriors,
so there was an indulgent one and a disciplined one (culture).
What kept things apart was the Cast System.
Varna= colour. A system of colours. You can only marry within
your caste, if you were lighter skinned you could appeal to
marry a higher cast. Every civilisation ends up with a “slave
cast” they are the Untouchables. It is not a caste, it is an
“outcast” untouchables, so they are given various names.
Canalala’s (dog-eaters, Under Gandhi’s influence they were
called Harijans, now they are called Dalits (the oppressed).
4 main castes:
1) Brahmins (priests)
