Ideology – body of ideas used in support of an economic, political or social theory
oLiberalism, Socialism, Conservatism, Nationalism, Feminism
Public Administration – the way in which the governments conduct themselves
through bureaucratic processes; a discipline and a practice
Bureaucracy – a form of organization
Politicians – elected officials
Bureaucrats – appointed officials
Political Spectrum
Democracy – rule by the people
o“Run by the people ruled by the people and for the people” – Lincoln
Direct Democracy – in which people have a direct say in matters of the state
oPlebiscites are just like a referendum although they are non-binding
Representative Democracy – people appoint representatives to speak in matters of state
oWhat we currently have in Canada as well as more developed countries
Deliberative Democracy – governing decisions made based on discussions by citizens
oVery rare type of democracy
oPopular in British Columbia
The democracy is bad in Canada for various reasons:
oPeople don’t vote because they don’t know how or where too
oWould mandatory voting change anything?
No majority would be left out because everyone would have voted
Youth do often not show up (have no interest or knowledge)
If they voted it would likely be uneducated

Economic Spectrum
Capitalism – economic system based on the private ownership and free market
oThere is no competition and emphasis on private trade
Mixed Economy – mixture of private and state control
oCrown cooperation’s, state run corporations that act like they are government run
Ex: LCBO, Via Rail
Socialism – means of production and distribution controlled by the government
Communism – all property owned by all in the classless society
oNo upper, middle and lower classes
Ideological Spectrum
Left – members of an organization most favoring change – liberal
Centrist – holding or advocating of moderate political views
Right – members of a group who hold more conservative views than others
Elements of Democracy
There is a demos (people, citizenship, people who can vote)
oChief electoral officers are not allowed to vote either are refugees (less citizens)
There is a territory where decisions apply
oSovereign territory with a border
There is a decision making procedure
oHas to be legitimate to the people
Procedure is regarded as legitimate by the demos
Freedom – Constrained vs Infinite Freedom
oShould prisoners be allowed to vote?
How can a state be democratic?
oChoices (political parties), Competition ($), Output vs Input
Liberalism in Canada
Liberalism – is held to stand for a political view that verges towards the universal/abstract
oEmbraces change within the society
Welfare state but taxes are high
Primary objective of economic activity is to improve human welfare
Dominant ideology of Canada?
Group rights – collective interest
Emphasize on classic freedom and minimal government (laisez-faire)
In Canada we are moving towards group collective rights rather than individual freedom
Welfare liberals want the state invention
Neo-liberalism: free trade and free market is the only way to protect everyone
Not as common in Canada as it is in the US
oThe second amendment is strong in the US – (gun culture)
Fear of the government, the feeling of safety and self-protection
In Iowa, the blind people are allowed to have guns (right to)
