The state wants nationalism because it is more likely of them to then accept a common political authority and help with defense when they are attacked: that"s why nation-states are fairly successful over large territories. Con: this loyalty causes deaths during war that were unheard of in the past like in world war one and two, causes large scale destruction to large amounts of people.
