The rise and fall of the ottoman empire: The ottoman empire emerged out of a series of conquests beginning in the 1300s, founded by osman i. Empire gradually expanded, growing to cover much of the middle east, southeastern europe, and north africa. During the 1400s and 1500s, the ottoman empire was one of the world"s greatest powers. Throughout the 14th and 15th centuries (1500s-1600s), the ottoman state gradually reshaped its government and military institutions to meet the needs of administering and defending an entire empire. The ottoman empire"s dominant religion was islam, although conversion was not required of the people the empire conquered. Ottoman empire was at its largest in 1683. The ruler of the ottoman empire was called the sultan; he was an absolute monarch. He was assisted by an imperial council headed by a grand vizier. The council"s role was to discuss matters of governance of the empire.
