Document Summary
In my opinion, i am in agreeance with geoff stevens in which conflict of interest is the more serious form of corruption compared to patronage. Conflict of interest entails a public official, parliament member or public servant to use their position to benefit themselves and/or their family. Patronage occurs when a person, qualified or not, is given an employment opportunity through connections made by their friend or family member. As michael macdonald points out in his article ethics and conflict of interest, conflict of interest usually takes the form of financial interest or advantages for the individual and/or their family. The reason that this is a major contributor to corruption is when the private interest interferes with the job duty. As a previous public servant, i was required to swear in my affirmation of allegiance to the crown.
