The study (-ology) upon (epi) the population (demos) It is a study of taking the walk upstream and finding the cause of things (risk factors leading to outcome) of health and disease in populations. Epidemiology started with communicable diseases chronic diseases (cancer etc) and seroepidemiology clinical and drug molecular/genetic/social epi. Infect individuals with the disease material in the hope to develop immunity against that disease. Used for smallpox back in the days, but was not very successful. Dairy maids who got cowpox cannot get smallpox, so jenner carried out variolation to apply disease material of cowpox to a boy named james phipps. This was the first vaccination, which was very successful. Purposely introduced the boy to smallpox and he was okay. Carried out the first randomized control trial to test what acid can be used to treat scurvy. Although it was not his idea that acids may treat scurvy.
