What is social psychology?
o The scientific study of the way in which a person’s thoughts, feelings, & behaviours
are influences by the real or imagined presence of other people (Allport,1985).
o Characteristics of Social Psychology
Scientific and pulling away from arts & the humanities
Looks at individual behaviour
Wide range of human behaviour
Connections within us
Social psychology differs from philosophical studies as it empirical.
What is Science?
Method of inquiry (how you go about asking certain questions)
A field must adopt a set of values & methods to be considered a scientific field.
Three of these values are:
o Accuracy
o Objectivity
Removing biases
o Skepticism
Information needs to be verified.
Scientific method is systematic observation, description, & measurement.
History of Social Psychology
The scientific study of social psychology developed at the end of 19th century.
Norman Triplett was one of the pioneers.
o Wanted to know whether or not cyclist, cycled faster against the clock or other
cyclists.
Floyd Allport wrote an important book on interactions of individuals in their social contexts
World War 2 increased research in social psychology

Gordon Allport
o Prejudice, establishment of the society of the Psychological Study of Social Issues
