PSYC 2330 Midterm: Midterm 2 Notes
Document Summary
Signal/stimulus (s: stimuli that precedes the response. Mcdonald"s sign is also a signal that the response can occur. Reinforcing stimulus stimulus that follows the response: strengthens the bond between s and r . Example: putting cigarettes in pretty packages, which is a very strong stimulus for a beginner smoker: operant response is the smoking, the nicotine is the reinforcing stimulus because of it"s affects on the brain (biologically significant stimuli) In terms of extinction: also applies because in extinction, the animal stops responding to the stimulus cause they develop other responses. Primary reinforcers: stimuli needed for survival, e. g. food, water, sex, stimuli that mimics the effects of food, water and sex in the brain = drugs, sensory stimulation and novelty. Secondary reinforcers/conditioned reinforcers a previously neutral stimulus that acquired the capacity to strengthen stimulus-response associations because it has been repeatedly paired with food, or with some other primary reinforce.
