Week 1: an introduction to the psychology of law. Forensic psychology: deals with all aspects of human behaviour as it relates to the law or the legal system. James cattell was the first to conduct experiments in eyewitness testimony: found that answers were often inaccurate and there was no real relationship between confidence and accuracy. Binet did a study with children and the effect of misleading questions: found that they led to the least accurate answers. Stern is responsible for the reality experiment : found recall is the worst for portions of events that are the most emotionally arousing. Schrenck-notzing was the first expert witness to provide testimony in court about the effect of pretrial publicity on memory: retroactive memory falsification when people confuse things they heard in the media for actual memories. Varendock found that children are very prone to suggestion in an experiment where they asked children about a man who did not exist.
