Most common in survey research and other quantitative methods. Difficult to devise a single measure of complex concepts: especially true with regard to attributes and orientations, research devise several items, each providing some indication of the variable. *we look at the measuring excellence ranking 49 universities (not all but a lot) *now we know there are three categories (we looked at comprehensive) looks at 6 broad areas and looking at indicators. This is really an index of an index each braod category its an index itself brought into another index. A single indicator proides a valid and reliable measure of some vaiables. E. g marital status; # of children in a fmialy. Other variables are more difficult and complex to measure. Some mat require > 1 indicator of a variable. Some may involve a # of dimentions that calls for multiple indicators. Some may be concerned with degree to which a variable is present.
