Marx view on Alienation:
1. ProductAlienation:Aworker is alienated from the product of his/ her labour,
which is owned by the employer
2. ActivityAlienation: The activity of work itself is alienated because it in
involuntary and forced, fails to develop a worker’s creative potential
3. SpeciesAlienation:A result of product and activity of alienation, workers become
alienated from their essential nature and what makes them human. Estranged
labour tears away from species of life.
4. SocialAlienation: Workers are alienated from each other
Alienation according to Marx: Rooted from industrial capitalism, all means for the
development if production transform themselves into means of domination over the
producers – Supressed creativity
Relate this to Mardi Gras documentary about bead production: Workers are alienated
from product because the product is essentially owned by worker. Since work is repetitive
workers are forced to reproduce same product without any ability to incorporate
creativity. Product and activity alienation result in workers become alienated from basic
want to work. Workers not allowed to speak to others during work hours or are penalized.
Women not allowed to communicate with male workers in dorm rooms.
Since globalization is expanding it is positive because work is being outsourced, but is
bad because it is alienating some workers. For example, in the film “Life and Debt”, the
International Monetary Fund (IMF) limited Jamaica’s ability to import and export goods.
The agreement with the IMF created economic instability and a loss of jobs for the
people of Jamaica. They were forced to import local product because it was considered
cheaper. Bananas and milk were no longer needed and were discarded of. This ultimately
led to debt. Karl Marx said that “free labour is slave labour”, meaning that without
income it is impossible to survive.
The Zapatistas are members of an armed rebel group located in Mexico fighting for
neoliberalism. Led by a man named Sub Comandante Marcos. They are fighting against
the government who are trying to take what is theirs. (Not Marxist but want changes in
Liberal Democracy: Political system in many countries including Canada and the United
States – one person, one vote. Every citizen of legal voting age has right to vote (except
prisoners and other exceptions)
Neo-Liberalism: Economic policy that calls for free hand of market no subsides. Example
would be Life and Debt documentary. Marxist Radical Theory: Calls for a complete overhaul of the system that would
overthrow the capitalist mode of production and replace it with something new.
List of Movements:
Royal Commission on the Relations of Labour and Capital: It condemns oppressive
working conditions in many industries. The commission makes a string of
recommendations to improve working conditions - but the federal government does not
act on them, saying to do so would infringe on provincial authority.
Workmen's CompensationAct, Ontario (1914): Ontario becomes the first province in
Canada to introduce a state social insurance plan with the Workmen's CompensationAct.
Prior to this legislation, the only recourse for employees injured on the job is to sue their
employers for damages, but as lawsuits increase, employers turn to the government
seeking an insurance plan for industrial accidents. The government issues a Royal
Commission to be led by Sir William Meredith. In his final report, released in 1913,
Meredith suggests a trade-off where workers give up their right to sue in exchange for
compensation. He advocates for no-fault insurance. TheAct is modeled after his
Wartime labour relations regulations, Order-in-Council P.C. 1003 (1944): Labour
relations fall under provincial jurisdiction, but during the Second World War the federal
government, exercising its emergency wartime powers, establishes a national system of
labour-relations law. From the privy council order comes the introduction of a labour
relations board, but P.C. 1003 also establishes provisions on the certification of unions,
the legal obligation for both parties to enter into good-faith collective bargaining, and
prohibitions on unfair labour practices. The order is abolished at the close of the war, but
similar provincial legislation is enacted across the country in 1948.
Federal Public Service Staff RelationsAct (1967): In 1965, the Canadian Union of Postal
Workers defies government policies and stages an illegal, country-wide strike.At issue is
the right to bargain collectively, the right to strike,
