Some crimes are not deviant ex; driving on a highway where everyone is driving over the speed limit. Things can be seen as deviant or criminal according to the different situations. Cultural relativity seen as wrong in one culture but not another ex. female toplessness. Historical relativity laws change over time. Ex; heroin used to be in cough medicine and homosexuality used to be illegal. Contextual relativity ex; swearing in a sports bar vs. swearing at a wedding. Gender relativity ex; males vs. females getting into physical fights or views on sex. Researching and measuring crime: role of research and exp. (cct 18-24) Types: experiment, surveys(quantitative), qualitative (modes of observation) Things can be misinterpreted, superficial, with low validity. Qualitative: can include participant or non-participant observation.
