SOC 2070 Study Guide - Final Guide: Labeling Theory, Homicide, Femininity
Document Summary
Make sense of the world around you. Something you can look at and identify. Anything that is harmful (homicide, sexual assault, etc) Degree - harm is not on a scale/spectrum. Deviant but not harmful - smoking pot, sex. Rarity - how rare the behaviour is. Many things are rare but not deviant - winning lottery. Many things are common and deviant - underage drinking. That which society condemns - how many people need to react for something to be deviant. Deviance violates social norms - something that violates norms/values. Norms are recurring patterns of human behaviour. Normative consensus (bereska 11) - how can we violate norms if there is no definitive definition of what norms are. We have consensus sometimes and social norms are constantly changing, making consensus difficult. Care, fairness, loyalty, authority, sanctity define deviance across different countries and cultures. The nature of deviance is located in the characteristics of a person.
