Base: chief cells, parietal cells, enteroendocrine cells. Chief cell: pyramidal with basal nucleus, helps digest proteins into peptides by secreting pepsinogen which is converted to pepsin at ph 5. Parietal cells: spherical/pyramidal shape with central nucleus; secretes hcl. Enteroendocrine cells: stain with silver; pyramidal with central nucleus; secretes products into lamina propria, many different secretions. Plicae circulatures (big folds), villi and micro villi for maximum absorption. Enterocyte: columar with basal nucleus, microvilli for 600x surface area, aborption. Mucous goblet cells: goblet shape, basal nucleus, secretes protective mucous. Panath cells: not in rabbits, cats and pigs, pyramidal, basal nucelus, regulate bacterial flora.
