Document Summary

Quantifying the effects of temperature: difference between the rates in a temperature change of 10 degrees. Endothermy: endothermy: the ability to maintain an elevated body temperature via internally generated heat. Insect thermoregulation: can warm up thorax where the flight muscles are and maintain this as long as it"s flying. 3 basic components of thermoregulation system: receptor sensor that responds to changes (stimuli, control centre sets range of values and evaluates input and sends output, effector receives output form control centre and produces a response. Vasconstriction and vasodilation: vasoconstriction heat kept in and retained by the body, for cold environment, vasodilation heat loss by convection and radiation, for warm environment. Correction of overheating: detected by thermoreceptors in the hypothalamus, causes vasodilation and sweating, skin capillaries dilate so that the blood flows close to the skin heat is lost from the blood. Will start increasing mr to maintain body heat at different temperatures in different seasons.
