Four main groups of biomolecules: proteins - peptides or polymers of amino acids. Structural, energy storage, hormones, etc. : carbohydrates - monosaccharides and polysaccharides. Energy storage and cell signalling, structural: nucleic acids - dna, rna, nucleotides. Storage of genetic information, structural, energy storage, energy metabolism. Biochemistry is principally concerned with the chemistry and molecular interactions of biological molecules associated with living systems. All chemical change involves rearrangements of elections. Biochemistry explains life in terms of atomic structures of biological molecules. Biosphere contains more than 106 different species ranging from single cells to complex animals: 8. 7 million eukaryotes, 86% of land species and 91% of marine species remain to be discovered. All life forms use the same types of biomolecules and all share some common metabolic feature. Most biochemical reactions are mediated by enzymes. Enzymes are proteins that catalyze biochemical reactions: lower activation barrier - make it faster. Their catalytic activity is a function of their molecule structure.
