Case Study #1 – Mr. Rudy Walker

Mr. Rudy Walker is a 77 year old gentleman who is recovering from total hip surgery on his
right leg after falling in the shower at his home. He has been retired from CN rail for 12 years.
His medical history includes a mild heart attack at age 54; he is on low dose aspirin,
Lipitor/atorvastatin, atenolol, and takes vitamins regularly. He lives with his wife in a small
bungalow; they have three grown children who are married and live in other cities. On post-op
day 2 his PCA was discontinued and Rudy is now receiving Tylenol #3 every 4 hours. His
morning vital signs are: TPR 36.2 – 58 – 14, BP 120/92. Rudy is reluctant to participate in
physical therapy and his physical strength is declining every day; he is only able to tolerate 3-4
steps at a time. Rudy has difficulty using a urinal independently and, as a result, he has been
wearing Depends. He has not had a bowel movement in 3 days. CPAS is consulted and will
