Document Summary

Inhibits ca leading to increased excretion of hco3 as nahco3, increased excretion of k and na and increased h retention. Therapeutic uses: glaucoma, petitmal seizures, acute high altitude sickness. Osmotic diuretic mannitol: edema, metabolic alkalosis. Acts in the thin descending limb of the loop of henle. Not much used due to quick compensation short term use only. Therapeutic uses: edema, maintain high urine flow in acute renal failure. Adverse effects: dehydration followed by increased water intake. Loop diuretics furosemide, ethacrynic acid, bumetanide, torsemide. Acts at the thin descending loop of henle. Inhibits na/k/2cl cotransporter, leading to increased excretion of na, k, ca and h and increased retention of uric acid. Therapeutic uses: edema due to chf, hepatic or renal diseases. Adverse effects: hyponatremia, hypokalemia, hypovolemia, alkalosis, hypercalcemia, ototoxicity, hypotension, hyperuricemia, hypocalcemia. Furosemide + spironolactone = best prescription for chf.
