Document Summary

Biol 373l study questions experiment 1: striking patellar tendon extension of leg. The striking of the patellar tendon causes the muscle spindles in the quadriceps tendon to stretch. A proprioceptor (stretch sensory receptor) detects the stretching in the quadriceps. There is an increase in firing of afferent impulses from the proprioceptor to the spinal cord through sensory nerve fibers. The sensory impulses are carried to a ganglion cell in the dorsal root. The sensory neuron synapses directly with the sensory motor neuron (posterior gray horn to anterior gray horn). The motor neuron sends an efferent impulse along ts axon, through the ventral root, the spinal nerve, and then to the quadriceps femoris. Acetylcholine is released at the motor end plate and the muscle contracts. The leg then extends (kicks) forward: abnormal babinski repsonse. The tip of the tongue, lips and fingertips have the largest areas of the cortex.
