What is law? law: set of rules and principles guiding conduct in society (social contract of our values) law functions to prevent disputes and facilitate relationships. Protects members of society in 2 ways: sets rules with penalties in order to encourage compliance, seeks to hold those who break the law accountable for their misconduct. Ethics and law often contradict or collide with each other (i. e. representing a client in a murder case) Primary goal is to protect persons and their property, facilitate personal and commercial interactions, and provide mechanisms for dispute resolution. Depends on your position in society (people in higher positions have more sway on laws, more power) Provides us with freedom to exercise our rights. Provides us with the ability to ful ll our own personal desires (within reasonable limits) People who violate the criminal code of canada are subject to criminal sanctions (e. g. nes or prison)
