Lecture 5: The War From the Bottom Up
I. Statistical Power of the Civil War
The North adopted many different outfits, however, Lincoln created standardization
of blue uniforms.
There were many married man, 29% of Union soldiers were married, 36% of
Southerners were married.
Parental consent was forced for young boys to attend.
About 630 thousand perished during the war.
Volunteering & the Draft. The Confederate Draft (1862), the Union Draft (1863), &
those who avoided the war.
South passed Conscription act that males 18-30 forced to serve 3 years in the
Confederate armed forces.
Union posed a draft that men aged 18-30 later 18-45 to join the military.
The branches of the armed forces: Cavalry, navy, artillery & infantry.
II. Camp Life
Civil war was an incredibly boring; long periods without seeing any actions; the
average soldier only experienced 7 days of warfare per year.
Camps had libraries, theatres; mobilize churches’ merchants, etc.
Camps would sometimes be larger area of the states.
Armies of diversity: Why the Civil War was America’s first multicultural war.
Yankees were full of new immigrants (Irish, Italian, Germans, Catholics, Natives,
Jews, African Americans, etc.)
Fair number of Jewish soldiers fighting on both sides for first time.
Passing the time: getting mail, reading books, letters, singing, sports and leisure.
Letters and magazines were a big deal because life was very boring at camp.
Food was terrible quality: “Almost as awful as war itself…”: Bad food and disease
(wiping tens and thousands of soldiers).
Soldiers were used to eating fresh vegetables and food from the farm, and they
weren’t used to getting bad food.
