Sell-off of public housing to private markets. 1 in 5 canadian households unable to find affordable and healthy homes. 2007 an annual average of 1 out of every 100 new homes were affordable (social) homes. Renter households have, on average, less than half the annual income of owner households. Rents are increasing faster than renters" incomes. Existing housing is aging, poorly maintained, declining in quality. Supports for special assistance to access and maintain housing for those with physical and mental health needs are non-existent. Canada is one of the few countries in the world without a national housing strategy.
