Attawapiskat first nation is located in northern ontario, which is home to around 2,000 people. This community has consistently been burdened with suicides for decades, but it became even worse this past fall season, when 11 people tried to kill themselves. Jackie hookimaw, who is a member of the community, stated that the most recent suicide attempts began when her niece who was only 13 took her own life in. As a response to the attempted suicides, the chief and council declared a state of emergency. First nations crisis response units and teams were then brought in, including social workers and mental health care nurses. Then the article goes further to talk about four things to help understand the suicide crisis : suicide is not just an attawapiskat problem.
