Damage to one area may damage fibres that pass through the location rather than the location itself --> incorrect assumptions. Electrolytic lesion may stimulate other areas of the brain and cause distant release of a neurotransmitter that cause the effects. Excitotoxic lesion: a brain lesion produced by intracerebral injection of an excitory amino acid. Kainic acid - acts on cell bodies and only kills cells at the location of the injection (doesn"t damage fibres that pass through the region) 6-hydroxydopamine: selectively taken up and kills axons and terminal buttons of adrenergic or dopaminergic neurons.
