Document Summary

Psychology 101 long answer 3: identify the three stages of prenatal development. For each stage, indicate the typical age of the organism, important risks to the developing organism, as well as any major developmental milestones. Development: a zygote forms (egg germinated by sperm, single cell). Travels through fallopian tube to the uterus (takes about a week). At day 7 becomes called blastocyst composed of two different cell types: embryoblast which will become embryo and trophoblast which will become placenta. Takes another week to implant into the uterus, after which the placenta forms. Risks: sometimes blastocyst implants in the fallopian tube which is too small to hold growing cell mass, miscarriage occurs. At this stage 20% of pregnancies fail, most of the time without known pregnancy even happened. Embryonic stage (2 weeks - 2 months): Development: embryo forms, cells begin to differentiate into different types such as skin cells, neural cells etc.
