Affective development: attachment theory: two dominant theories of psychodynamic and behaviourist. Infant given access to surrogate mothers: wire mother, cloth mother, manipulates what mothers do, wire mother provides essentials of life (lamp, bottle of milk, cloth mother doesn"t provide anything except comfort from cloth, conducts several experiments. Harlow"s results: cloth mother is security blanket. Harlow"s conclusions: emotional attachment is primary motivational need that serves evolutionary purposes, support for principle of monotropy. Infants are genetically programmed to form an attachment with one responsive caregiver: most cases the mother. John bowlby attachment theory significant giver: wanted to see if harlow"s work was with actual humans, try to replicate harlow"s with humans.
