Introduction to Psych 230
This course will be:
Primarily psychological
This class is a general overall ‘framework’ composed of ideas and terms.
No emphasis on specific facts, but rather emphasize the ideas.
Looking at things from multiple perspectives (not just psych)
We are going to be looking into:
How variable are our judgments.
We can make a clear, definitive judgment - this is more an illusion then a reality. (How
confident should we be in those definitive judgments?)
*need to read textbook for tests. They give the background info that the prof doesn’t touch on.
Will not be reiterating the textbook.
And classroom material does matter.
The movie we will be watching demonstrates really good examples of the psychological
principles.
Will be tested on which character demonstrated which psychological principle.
Tests:
Won’t be tested on memorized facts. (Ex. This person did what this year…)
You will be tested on what they did and why they did it - and the implications this
had.
Tested on understanding, not on memorization. UNDERSTAND CONCEPTS!
There will be application questions such as “Mary is ‘x', what does she do”
Look at the studies and ask yourself “what are they trying to figure out” read the
headings.
The study will be feeding into the idea of the heading.
Tests are 50 multiple choice Qs. Half text Half lecture
There may be a spot to explain why you picked the answer you pocked. You can write it
out on the test. If he understands it and you’re correct, he will give you the mark. Can
get extra marks if you can explain your choices. Can clarify things that are
ambiguous.
Tests non-cumulative, but some concepts can be revisited (ex. The movie will be
revisited due to the examples)
The readings are fixed and will always be tested on the following test.
Research Paper:
You can choose option 2 to write the paper if it is your strength (ME)
The paper is very specific. NOT GENERIC
Empirical quantitative research articles where they collect data will be used. Individual
studies
Find every single article on your topic. Narrow down your topic. ex. Abuse -> abuse
from women against men -> woman against men in a specific setting (this is how you
narrow down your topic)
The textbook is awesome at summarizing. *This is a template for the paper.
Cover the basis
If someone who doesn’t understand anything read your paper can understand
