Combining oppression with angry, hostile, criminally minded inmates - spark goes off = riot. Spark = loss of privileges, transfer, lack of rec time. Prison conditions have improved over 50 years. Rehabilitation period of 60"s (started to see the bene ts of certain rehab strategies)- increase of riots, despite improvements. Rehab strategies - work release, conjugal visits, temporary absences, wage labour educational programs. Theory would imply that older institutions would see more riots than newer facilities. Older institutions have tougher conditions, but riots rarely occur. Therefore bad prison conditions do not necessarily equate a disturbance. Over-predicts number of riots that should occur. Oppressive conditions and volatility are constant - riots rarely occur. Oppression, angry prisoners, criminals as a basis for riots. We want to achieve wealth and status. Humans resort to deviant behaviour, illegal ways to obtain it (money) Less emphasis on the means to achieve success (more focused on what the kardashians have than how they got their money)
