One of the most violent riots in canadian history 1971. Disturbance with hostages (prison guards, staff members, etc. ) Lasts for a few hours (quickly ended due to lack of hostages) Ultimately 2 qualities illustrating change in pattern: (1) taking hostages, (2) destruction of prison property. Caused during an opportunistic time or minimal planning. Main concern for all inmates is personal safety: arming through weapons, security in numbers, would turn in to authority at opportunity. Loss of privilege after riot: possible destruction of property, fear of legal trouble, ultimately forced participation by other inmates or possibility of fire. The leader is not typically the one who started the riot.
