Document Summary

Pt extinction (mother of all extinctions) is the most severe extinction event that earth"s biosphere has ever suffered. Pt was the extinction of more than 50% all families, 96% of all species on planet. The top predator on land is gorgonospians (evolved in middle permian), some of which reached size of the large bear. Gorgonospians are part of diverse group of reptiles called synapsids or mammal like reptiles. It is from this group that mammals would evolve later. Following the extinction event, in the shallow ocean environment, instead of limestone produced by corals and other reef creatures, black fine grained shales containing high concentrations of the mineral pyrite dominated. Instead of rich and diverse fossil faunas prior to extinction, marine rocks are dominated by a few species such as the paper pecten claraia and the interarticulate brachiopod. Monospecific assemblages is one of the species that can survive the stressful conditions.
