STUDY GUIDE
Fall 2018
KIN 361 – Introduction to Athletic Training – Lecture 1
Approach to each topic:
- Stabilization of the joint – bony, static or dynamic
o Static stabilization = ligaments
o Dynamic stabilization = tendon / muscle units
- Mechanisms of injury
- Treatment of the acute injury – R.I.C.E (Rest, Ice, Compression and Evaluation)
- Common injuries of the various regions of the body – Read about injuries in the text, while a few
key ones will be discussed in class
Terminology
- Tendinitis – an inflammation of a tendon, usually from an acute injury
o Teno-, tenonto-, tendo-, tendino- (prefixes) tendon
o -itis (suffix) inflammation
o Acute injury when the tendon is overloaded, causing pain and swelling
- Tendinosis (tendinopathy) – an inflammation of a tendon from chronic overuse
o Occurs from failed healing or repetitive trauma to a tendon chronic microtrauma
- Tenosynovitis – an inflammation of the synovial sheath surrounding a tendon
Suffixes
- -itis – an inflammation; e.g. osteoarthritis, conjunctivitis
- -megaly – an enlargement of; e.g. splenomegaly, hepatomegaly, acromegaly
- -lytic – breaks down; e.g. hydrolytic
- -rhea – a flow, discharge; e.g. rhinorrhea running nose
- -(ec)tomy – an excision; e.g. menisectomy removal of a meniscus (knee)

Document Summary
Kin 361 introduction to athletic training lecture 1. Stabilization of the joint bony, static or dynamic: static stabilization = ligaments, dynamic stabilization = tendon / muscle units. Common injuries of the various regions of the body read about injuries in the text, while a few. Treatment of the acute injury r. i. c. e (rest, ice, compression and evaluation) key ones will be discussed in class. Tendinitis an inflammation of a tendon, usually from an acute injury: teno-, tenonto-, tendo-, tendino- (prefixes) tendon. Itis (suffix) inflammation: acute injury when the tendon is overloaded, causing pain and swelling. Tendinosis (tendinopathy) an inflammation of a tendon from chronic overuse: occurs from failed healing or repetitive trauma to a tendon chronic microtrauma. Tenosynovitis an inflammation of the synovial sheath surrounding a tendon. Megaly an enlargement of; e. g. splenomegaly, hepatomegaly, acromegaly. Rhea a flow, discharge; e. g. rhinorrhea running nose. (ec)tomy an excision; e. g. menisectomy removal of a meniscus (knee) Kin 361 - lab # 1 the ankle.
