Linguistics 100: the study of language- chapter 1. Early humans had developed musical ability prior to language > this is a speculation about how language may have originated. The ability to produce sound/vocal patterning appears to be in an ancient part of the brain that humans share with all vertebrates. There is no direct evidence relating to the speech of our early ancestors that tell us how lan- guage was back in the early stages > thus there has been no shortage of speculation about the origins of human speech. In most religions, there appears to be a divine source who provides humans with language. Hypothesis: if human infants were allowed to grow up without hearing any language around them, they would spontaneously begin using the original god-given language. However, experiments have proven that there is no spontaneous language. If human language did emanate from a divine source, we have no way of reconstructing that original language.
