NURS 334 Study Guide - Final Guide: Iron-Deficiency Anemia, Water Intoxication, Fluoride
Document Summary
Infants p. 437-441: evidence that accelerated wt gain in first 6ms may be correlated with obesity later in life, evidence that bf promotes slower wt velocity in early infancy and serves as a protective mechanism for later obesity. First 6ms: human milk is most desirable complete diet: term babies receiving bm often don"t need any vitamin supplements. Vit d and b12 may be indicated if mother"s intake of these is inadequate. 400 iu dly of vit d is recommended in infants for the first few days of life. For formula-fed, this should occur until the infant is taking at least 1l/day of vit-d fortified formula. Those taking less than this in formula should continue to take it. If infant is exclusively bf after 4ms, fetal iron stores are depleted (at 4ms). Infants, aside from milk, do not require any liquids up until 4ms. Water intoxication can lead to water intoxication and hyponatremia.
