Thoughts and behaviours used to manage the internal and external demands of situations that are appraised as stressful. People with less social support have higher mortality rates: coping is a dynamic process, occurring over time, by which the environment and the person influence each other / different ways to cope with the same stressor. Styles are stable patterns of responding to stress, characteristic of individuals. Approach vs avoidance: approach = directly deal with the stressor, avoidance = minimize or ignore the stressor. Problem focused vs emotion focused: problem focused = attempts to do something about the stressful condition that are harming or threatening the individual, emotion focused = efforts to regulate emotions experience due to the stressful events. Approach + problem focused: active coping, planning, seeking social support, seeking information. Internally focused: self blame, denial, rumination, catastrophizing. Emotion focused: self distraction, reappraisal + positive reframing, acceptance, humour. Emotion focused + avoidance: substance use, behavioural disengagement, religion.
