Intro to Movement Neuroscience
Lecture #1: Introduction to Neuroscience
Neuroscience is based on the functional anatomy of the nervous system
There are neuroanatomical, neurophysiological, and cognitive/behavioural
aspects of human movement.
Levels of neuroscience include…
1. Molecular neuroscience
2. Cellular “ “
3. Systems “ “
4. Behavioural “ “
5. Cognitive “ “
Introduction to Neuroanatomy
Four regions of the nervous system…
1. Peripheral
2. Spinal
3. Cerebrum
4. Cerebellum
PNS nervous system structures not included in the brain and spinal cord. Ex:
medial, sciatic, ulnar, radial nerves
CNS spinal cord, cerebellum and cerebral regions, and brainstem.
Cerebrum: intelligence, process information
Cerebellum: Coordination, regulation
The 3 systems involved in these regions…
1. Somatosensory
Periphery to the brain
2. Somatic Motor
Brain to the skeletal muscles
3. Autonomic
Brain and viscera (smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, glands)
Maintain homeostasis

Intro to Movement Neuroscience
Peripheral Region
Afferent axons information to the brain (think of ‘A’ as in arrives at the brain)
When we touch a subject
Efferent axons information away from the brain
Making appropriate movement
Somatic nervous system cell bodies are contained in the brain and spinal cord
(CNS)
Autonomic nervous system cell bodies are outside of the spinal column and
brain (in sympathetic trunk)
The Spinal Cord
Spinal cord has meninges covering it. the meninges contains cerebrospinal
fluid
Spinal nerve separates each side of the spinal cord (2)
Spinal cord extends from foramen magnum to L1-L2
The spinal cord has 31 segments with a pair of spinal nerves branching from
each segment
The Spinal cord ends distally at the Conus medularis
Cauda Equina (horsetail) Where epidurals are performed
Filum Terminalae: CT that connects to the sacrum and coccyx
Internal Anatomy of the Spinal Cord
Ventral (Front) contains motor pathways
Sensory info exits the CNS from the ventral end and down the spinal cord
Dorsal (back) contains sensory pathways
