there are decisions to be made every day here we will just put it in a business context Every day you see a case there is a problem We are a consultant here to solve business cases to actual business problems generally you have 2 weeks to create a case reportwhat is a case a real life business problem hypothetical in this course in the future reallifeapply theoretical concepts to an actual situationapplies theories learned in class to an actual situation develop decisionmaking skills from day one its all about finding the best alternative and why why are all the other alternatives not marksoyou are a consultant for the company in the caseonot a summary of the case itself but a summary of what is to come in your case study report summary of the 1520 page case reportoto from date subjectnot who the case is being submitted to but to the person who is in the case the personcompany etc requestiong the case ie the sr manager or CEO of the company in the case you are the consultant from XYZ consultant submitting the case etcocritical assumptionswill be gone through in great detail but you will have a problem only the main problem will appear in the executive summaryrequired as there is incomplete informationmust be relevant reinforced with facts that are in the case oproblemoalternativesalternatives you consideredofacts consideredorecommendationoone page in length single spaced on its own page the rest of the case will be double spaced but the exec summary will be single spaced and in the real world you will never submit anything double spacedowhy do we have exec summary manager might not have time to look through the 1520 page doc so they can just look at the one page summary to see what is going on so they can then look at the details if they need toowhen do you think you should do the exec summary this should be completed last because you are summarizing what you have written in your report case formatcase will have headings subheadings bullets etcocritical assumptions5 marks required as there is incomplete information info that you cant findmust be relevant reinforced with facts that are in the casebased on the facts that are in the case you will have to make assumptions that will help you must be reinforced with facts that are in the case 1ie this is a medlarge size company because they have 550 thousand dollars in revenue this is critical because if you say that the company is 550 k in revenuethis might be critical because then you say why does he travel so much when he has 100 employess and does he have to do that the facts are that he travels and he has 550k revenue and you are assuming that it is a med siz company and he has x employees so chances are then that you dont have to travel as much as you are doing in the case2you do not want to assume the case away 35 assumptions on a 2 page case is enough because otherwise you are assuming the case away making your own caseoProblem Statements 20 markssatellite problems 5secondary problems that are a result of the central problemcentral problem 10main problemthe single most important thing to come up with when creating your case study because everything else stems from that 1often times the secondary problems are presented in the case2the main problem is not going to be impossible to find this is not a trick it should generally be obvious what oftentimes students have difficult with is that they will give more than one main problem bad or they look at what other teams are doing and their wording is not exactly the same as yours and then you change the wording and then chase the case around or dont and then bad things happen3what you are looking for is a theme ie worklif social responsibility accounting standards organizational structuresame as theme of the class 4not so important as to which comes first central or satelliteimplications on the org 5 marksdoes not mean you have to come up with 5 total it is just how many marks you can getimplications on the personnel1 what is going to happen to the org or the personnel if this problem continuesis not solved2ie org if a prob contineus the org might suffer lower profitsmight continue to decrease etchigher costs3ie personnel the ppl involved in the case you look at it from the org perspective and from the stakeholdersie employees may become frustrated and leavehigher turnoverlower morale increased frustration etc oAlternative Solutions the alternatives you have come up with to solve the primary probleminclude description procons and analysisis it viable is it relevant could it actually solve the primary problemwhen you come up with an alternative they should all have the 4 parts belowie Alternative Solution 1title1title of alternative Alternative 1 Fire sr manager2description What we want you to do what does it mean for this particular case in what theory or concept is it grounded indoes it relate to whether it is a theory or concept in the textbook or in other business research you have to figure out what it relates to Then you would reference the book or wherever you got it from Harvard business journal the theory or concept does not have to come from the text but it has to be a theory or concept that ties back to the case ie Alternative 1 change company incentive plandescription based on this alternative introducing a new incentive plan for employees would be benefitcial for employee happiness and company benefit We suggest peace rate system OR we suggest incentive plans OR wecommission AND then you start referencing theories3proscons what is goodbad about this particular alternative No alternative is going to be perfect there should always be both positives and negatives Overview of alternatives highlight briefly the advantages4analysis look at this alternative from big picture is it viable and make a concluding statement is this a good course of action more detail around the pros and cons and the description summary whether or not this is a good idea oRecommended Solution 10 markswhat is the best alternative and whyyou may decide to do a combination of alternatives as well Do not recommend all your alternatives because then you are not making a decision 152 pages maybe for this partno right or wrong answer as long as you can defend yourselfdoes it solve all problemseffect on org and personnelwhy is it better than the other alternatives that you described earlierdetailshow many alternatives should you havedepends on caseyou will have more than one 24 probably not 10ie you should hire consultants to look at incentive plan Problem you ARE the consultantie you have 100 employees who are bitterangryfrustratedfire them allnot a good solution they did not pay you 1000s of dollars for that recommendationbadburn down the business NO not a recommendationoimplementation 15 marksyour opportunity to say how you will put this recommendation into actionin real life this is probably the most critical partimmediate short term longtermmore than one bullet each doesnt have to be sequential order within each timeframe 1immediate what does the org have to do starting now up to 6 months from now2short term 6months to a year3long term a year and beyondmust be detaileduse concepts and theories be creative look to answer how what where who why1ie hire 5 sr managershow will they do that with what money they will need to have a recruitment strategy you might start that now and in 6 months you will be selectinghiring them 2ie first thing you need to do is have a meetingBAD obviouswith who why and wherebe detailed3we need a new marketing plan what does it look like where will we put it what sort of marketing plan etc opportunity to be creative not absurd and detailed be very detailed they will write how where what etc everywhereSay you said to implement a marketing plan now in a year you should assess how it is going Same with employees you might see about hiring them now in6 month assess
