Epidermis (epithelial layer- think, kerainized straiied squamous epithelium) Hypodermis (supericial fascia) is not part of the skin, hence subcutaneous ( ) To make kerain, with ight juncions (lifespan of kerain: ~25-45 days) Produces melanin gives the skin its colour. At the deepest layer of epidermis, with numerous branching processes for melanin transfer to adjacent cells. At epidermis & dermis boundary; have disc-like sensory nerve ending. Thickest layer found on palm of hand & soles of feet. Stratum lucidum- (extra layer that makes the skin thicker) Few rows of clear, lat, dead kerainocytes; keratohyaline granules parallel. Stratum granulosum- b (beds of kerain, with no organelles) High mitoic index, also melanocytes, some merkel cells. Cell types: typical of ct (fibroblasts, macrophages, some mast cells, wbcs) Semi-luid matrix heavily embedded with collagen, elasin & reicular ibers. Richly supplied with nerve ibers, blood & lymphaic vessels. 2 layers: thin, supericial papillary layer // thick, deep reicular layer.
