Document Summary

Anp1106 7. 2 (physiology of the nervous system [somatosensory higher levels]) & smell & taste. The three main levels of neural integraion in the somatosensory system are: Perceptual level neuronal circuits in the cerebral cortex. Sensory input to the reicular formaion (for arousal of brain): takes the pain informaion and distribute to the limbic system to process emoion pain [cry/frown] Olfactory is the only sensory that do not bypass thalamus. Smelling salts pain & temperature a chemical that irritates the insides of nostril. Second order sensory neurons receive synapses from primary sensory neurons, they send out an axons that immediately crosses the midline and projects to the appropriate nucleus of the thalamus. Second order neurons for pain are in the spinal cord gray mater; second order neurons for ine touch are in brain stem nuclei. Normal non-pain sensory nerve pass through the dorsal column of spinal cord. Synapse to second order neuron at brainstem crossover.
