Document Summary

Aim to quantify a natural patterns, describe, identify. A prediction that should be observed if the hypothesis is true. Hypothesis : explication of an observed pattern. (causal) Eg the light is out because the light bud is burnt out. Prediction : empirical pattern observed if hypothesis is true. Eg if the light bulb is burnt out, it will turn on if it is replaced. Inference : the conclusion (is the hypothesis supported or refuted) Correlate species richness to different parameters characterizing streams. In the observational one you would be checking a bunch of lakes, not manipulating the lakes. Mimicking the thing but it is not the same eg placebo. Smallest unit to which an experiment is applied, how many replicates. Gets much closer to true value and uncertainty decreases at higher sample size. Can be both abiotic or both biotic and may not be both independent or dependent.
