The earliest investigation into animal development was performed by aristotle. He had two main conflicting ideas about how this process took place. The organism is already preformed within the egg or internally within the sperm. Within the egg is simply a smaller version of the organism. An organism will arise from a morpheus mass that through time gains shape. Would take an egg at different time points to observe the development of the chick within the egg. He saw a mass that took shape into a chick. Proposed that the soul drove the change of shape. Robert hooke, viewing sections of cork under a microscope observed an organization similar to that of a honeycomb. This would be the basis of cell theory. All living organisms are composed of one or more cells. The cell is the basic unit of life. This lead to two other important cell biology discoveries. August weitzman said that there were two different types of cells.
