Yuanzhang was born into a poor family and was orphaned at 16. He lived in the monastery after this and received an education. Due to his buddhist upbringings, he had buddhist support in his reign. He joined the red turbans and use this experience to build his own forces. He became the first emperor of the ming dynasty and placed the capital in nanjing. Chinese interactions with foreigners was reduced and this reduced the threat of foreign invasion. Military commanders were given high status, but reinstated civil service examinations to have a few civil service officials to work alongside the military leaders. Despite this tyrannical way, he couldn"t establish control through killing corrupt officials and harsh domestic policies. He ensured that he could have the most control by carrying out purges of officials and others who gained too much power.
