Discussion question: what comes to mind when you think of policing in a modern society: citizens are rights-bearers whilst police maintain law and order. However, they must respect the rights that citizens have. There is more accountability involved - tiers to help ensure that officers are behaving accordingly: criminology is a very male-dominated field. Officers are attempting to meet certain quotas (e. g. indigenous officers in indigenous communities): many crimes are being done online. How do we get our laws to account for this: there is increased transparency because of technology such as cellphones. Anyone can report a crime and disseminate the information: 30-40% of calls to police have to do with mental illnesses. When state-run facilities began to shut down, individuals who needed help were simply let back out into the community after having been convinced that there would be many services available to them.
