(kidnapping was sentenced to death. ) There is a difference between socially binding rules and legally binding norms. *murder is a social norm and a legally binding norm. *building permits needed to build a shed is a legally binding rule. *adultery is now just a social norm (cheating on spouse) which used to be a legally binding norm as well. *discrimination is a law, and eventually became a social norm. Legislation (statutes) regulations that are made by government bodies. Caselaw (court decision) when a court renders a judgement. The constitution is a set of basic rules that define how our government is made. Indigenous legal traditions is a set of practices done by indigenous individuals. Conduct rules: rules that tell people what they can and can"t do.
