Document Summary

The word economy comes from the greek world for one who manages a household . The management of society"s resources (e. g. , people, land, buildings, machinery) is important because resources are scarce. Scarcity the limited nature of society"s resources, which means that it cannot produce all the goods and services people wish to have. Economics the study of how society manages its scarce resources. Economy people interacting with one another as they go about their lives. The first four principles focus on individual decision-making. There is no such thing as a free lunch . To get one thing we like we usually have to give up another thing that we like. A big trade-off in today"s society is cleaner environment regulations. Pollution regulations give us a cleaner environment and health yet we end up trading that in for reducing the incomes of firms" owners, workers and customers. Another trade-off that society faces is between efficiency and equity.
